Now you’ve got me wondering, did Weyland and Yutani join because they believed in the cause, or because they got fired? It could be less bringing people to justice and more THAT’LL SHOW THEM >:C. But it seems more likely that they got fired for their political affiliations or budget cuts or whatever. I sort of saw Weyland working in more of a tech position rather than just as a janitor or something… maybe he was a repairman? Some skilled trade that nevertheless might not be that respected in a white collar environment. Though how he wouldn’t know about Jack is still kind of hard to grasp since he probably uses a shitton of power in his official lab, not to mention whatever boltholes he has besides vault ten… Maybe he just wasn’t there very long. XDI always sort of saw Weyland and Yutani as friends who bickered like an old married couple and had pretty much been doing it forever. Yutani could have held down a job with Chaank though, it’s not like he’d be the first employee to bitch about work. I dunno when they’d have met Raimi, I always liked to think of them as having met Raimi later, at Anarchists Local 562. :p
Ok their plan was pretty terrible, especially the not having real guns bit (though I suppose I understand their rationale, they’re very nice boys after all, don’t wanna hurt anyone.) The only mention of a backer I can think of is the line about “I got this from Norse today” I think they said Norse but it could be something else? Anyway they talk about Ridley and his unfortunate nickname. So Norse (Morse?) could be their backer. And if I wanted some disposable minions that I could easily deny, a bunch of stoners ARE a good choice, however erudite they may be.
See it’s the logistics of the situation that bug me. If he lives there, then he’s gotta eat and shit and sleep and do all those other bodily functions, which means someone’s gotta provide for him, which means people are gonna know about him. Especially since he seems like the type to get absorbed in what he’s working on and forget to eat, so what, is he gonna show up at the cafeteria at 1 in the morning? Since you KNOW he probably just sleeps whenever. So this ups the pool of people who have to know about him. People can get used to quite a lot, I can see him becoming less of a person to the employees and more of an obstacle to be avoided. I do have a pet theory that the R&D people love it when he asks for more money, because then if you ask after him they’re more likely to grant your requests by virtue of you not being Dante.
“We need an extra 3 mil…” “UGH FINE WHATEVER FUCK OFF i need a drink”
Maybe they left her alive because fuck the Hardman project? Carpenter never seems particularly impressed with it in the movie, I think he was just sick of the damn thing at this point. And if she tells the press about it who cares, it’s gonna be shut down, and if they shut it down publicly it could be good PR? They could say that they’ve made mistakes and are gonna do better from now on and be all repentant, when it in fact cost them nothing. Though if it did work it would be horrific because then you could reprogram people, you could do some real Manchurian Candidate type shit though I doubt Dante thought of the aspects beyond SUPER SOLDIERS :D YAY! And the “here’s a giant wad of cash, now STFU” may have worked in the past, Carpenter seemed less likely to straight up kill people and more likely to be a bit more subtle, according to Ridley he’s the creative type.
God now you’ve got me imagining Nicholson as Ridley’s mentor, helping him get a start in the business and such, which makes a lot of his lines to Cale sad now that I think about it that way. But you don’t get a nickname like The Rat by being nice or having integrity, even if rats are cute. :3 I always sort of assumed he was always like he is, but I suppose he couldn’t have been born a corrupt arrogant asshole. I got the impression that he was more familiar with power than Cale was, he seemed very ok with the ruthlessness that goes along with the trade.
Well, Sucker Punch was basically kind of shit in everything except the visuals, I wouldn’t say the girls had really well defined personalities or anything so I don’t blame you for getting them mixed up. It’s a good movie as long as you don’t watch any of the not Dream Sequences and don’t think too hard. Being drunk may help.
I love the idea of Weyland having a job that involves working with technology or machinery of some kind; he was the one in charge of the lock decoder and the cutter after all. I suppose he could have heard some rumors about “that creepy weird guy in the basement” but never have seen Jack if he really didn’t work in that area… It’s unlikely, but on the other hand the building does have at least 72 floors! With that many employees and so much space to work in, I guess it’s possible…
(Or maybe it’s just a plot hole. Who knows.)
Oh, yeah, that line about “Norse” (Or “Morse”? Or “Morris”? I always heard “Moores”. Sheesh, Raimi, articulation) … My problem with it is that, as far as we know, Norse could be pretty much anything. It could be a person, an organisation, or even just a database containing information about various people. Okay, the last one is kinda unlikely, but we never see Raimi showing the others anything else than what looks like a random picture of Scott, so who knows? But yeah, I think they were probably just part of a bigger organization too.
Even though it really wasn’t such a good idea to not bring proper weapons, I kinda like the idea. It just suits them so well :D It’s part of what makes me think that they were probably all doing the operation because they believed in the cause and in their ideals; I think most people would be much more cautious and would want to be well protected just in case something bad happens. I mean, even without Jack’s intervention… the risks were really high. Hm… Maybe whatever organization is behind them forbids using weapons of any kind, and they just agreed to it so that they could carry on with the plan? (doesn’t sound very likely) But I prefer to imagine them as just being overly enthusiastic about the cause and taking a bad decision :p I can totally see Weyland starting to have doubts about it, though. He seems a little more cynical and down to earth than the other two…
Gotta admit, I still can’t really imagine Yutani working for CHAANK; I think his distaste for everything the company stands for would show too much and would prevent him from getting a job there in the first place if he tried; he seems to be kinda impatient at times and doesn’t really hide it when he is annoyed at something/someone. And whatever Weyland could have told him from when he was working there wouldn’t have helped either. I totally agree that they’re old friends who keep annoying each other but are still pretty close. (The way Yutani reacts to Weyland’s death makes me sad :( He is so shocked and upset…)
I always imagined Jack getting most of his food from vending machines whenever he’s too lazy to go to the cafeteria (or when he’s hungry in the middle of the night, since the building is completely empty during that time anyway). I doubt he would mind living almost only from snacks, sandwiches, candies and chocolate bars… Love that theory about the R&D people asking for money, I can just see them watching Jack walk out of Nicholson’s office and going “YES!” I think most of the employees would just avoid him and stay out of his way whenever they can, even if some of them may not know who he is. I guess I can see Scott or someone else speaking to the new employees and just mentioning that the weird guy they may see walking around the building is a “special case”, so they better not ask questions.
I like to see the Hardman project like an idea that seemed good at first but ended up being a gigantic money-pit because they just couldn’t make it work completely right (I think Jack could have fixed it eventually, but at some point during the project I guess he got distracted and started to spend a lot more time working on the Warbeast instead). Since John seemed to be in charge of supervising the project, I guess that may be why he looked so exasperated whenever it was mentioned; for him, the project also involved being forced to spend a lot of time with Jack, and all this for pretty much no good results (the armor itself seemed to work just fine, but maybe it was created for an earlier project and the Hardman thing was only supposed to be about the brainwashing thingy…). I think he may have recommended shutting the project down since he saw things weren’t working out so well, but maybe Nicholson or Scott refused and hoped that something good would come out of it at some point. I don’t think Scott would have allowed the project to be shut down, at least.
You just reminded me, CHAANK doesn’t only has ties to the government, they also work with the police! The sheriff in the opening didn’t look surprised at all when John and the others showed up, and they both knew each other’s name.
I always imagined Nicholson knowing Scott before he arrived at CHAANK, so he may have helped Scott get the job and have influenced him before he started to work there. I never really thought about how it could have influenced the way he talks to Hayden, but it’s a really cool way of looking at it. Stuff like “Remember, you’re one of us now” and “You’re chief executive! Start acting like it!” just seem to take a completely different meaning. I’m not sure if Nicholson would have tried to let Scott knows he was having second thoughts about Jack and his projects, or tried to involve him at some point. I guess I can see him trying to mention it, and Scott only dismissing it without a single hesitation.
(I’m having wayyy too much fun writing these. :D)
